When Michael and Pamela Parks moved to Auburn, N.Y., they noticed something critical was missing - a bike store. The Parks have always been enthusiasts and have broad experience with road racing, touring, mountain biking, cyclocross and fat biking. They also graduated from the Barnett Bicycle Institute in Colorado Springs in 2010. Their store, LB Lightning Cyclery, offers services for newbies and experts alike. LB Lightning Cyclery sells bikes, bike parts, and accessories while provide top-notch repair services. The Parks also cultivate a welcoming atmosphere so cyclists of all levels feel they can gather to ask questions and learn.
The Parks were able to successfully navigate the first year of operating their business. They are also sponsors for the upcoming Bon Ton Roulet, a seven-day bicycle excursion through the Finger Lakes of New York, where they will administer bike repairs along the route.
Michael and Pamela worked with SCORE mentor Maureen Reister to refine and strengthen their business plan. Reister relied on her personal business experience to help guide the couple as they prepared to open their company. “Do all of your homework and research before opening a small business,” says Parks. “Use all the resources available to you such as SCORE and the Small Business Administration.”
